What does a session look like?
Sessions range from 15-50 minutes depending on Spellers stamina and level. The sessions are typically one-to-one but can also be done in groups (this is a great way to make new friends, see different perspectives, and for parents to practice on the boards with less pressure). The biggest goal each session is to build up a spellers independence and confidence while accurately using the boards to promote communication and fluency.
A session includes:
One-on-one practitioner support by sitting by the student throughout the lesson
Co-regulation with the speller to help regulate the body to spell — this can also include body breaks if needed
Presuming competence through age appropriate lessons
Parent/caregiver involvement if desired to sit in on the session (materials are provided for questions that may come up during the session)
Scaffolded approach through the different types of boards and question types being asked to build up independence and leading up to answering open-ended questions

What is a Sliding Scale?
At Outspelling Barriers, we believe communication access should never be out of reach. We offer a sliding scale to help families receive the support they deserve, regardless of financial situation. Our scale is trust-based and rooted in equity and community care. You are welcome to choose the rate that works best for your family, no proof or documentation required (exception: Tier 4). We offer a mid year and end year check in as well in case situations have changed. The intention is to create fairness, flexibility, and access while ensuring high quality support to all spellers.
Example of the scale:
Tier 1 (Full Rate): $100-$125
Recommended: $5,000+ household income a month
You can comfortably meet your basic needs, have savings, and can afford extras like vacations, dining out, etc. Paying full price helps others access spelling too.
Tier 2 (Moderate Support Needed): $75-$99
Recommended: $3,500–$4,999 household income a month
You meet basic needs, have some flexibility, but don’t always have extra. A lower rate makes services more manageable for you.
Tier 3 (High Support Needed): $50-$74
Recommended: $2,000–$3,499 household income a month
You’re stretched financially, live paycheck to paycheck, or receive assistance. Paying full price would cause hardship. This tier offers meaningful support.
Tier 4 (Very Limited Means): Below $50
Recommended Under $2,000 household income a month
For families facing significant financial hardship. Sponsored by our full-rate clients and donors. Please inquire to check availability.
Please note, there is no application process or proof required for this (except for Tier 4). Simply choose the rate that feels right for your family and your needs and communicate this rate to your practitioner.
Travel Clause:
Local Travel: FREE
Anywhere within 30 miles of practitioner location.
“In State” Travel: ADDITIONAL $75 FEE ON TOP OF SESSION CHARGE
Within 1-3 hours of practitioner location to subsidize gas costs, vehicle maintenance, and practitioners time.
Out of State Travel: SITUATIONAL
Anything longer than 3+ hours away that may result in flying or extra costs on an individual basis. Pre-discussed before travel occurs.
Weekend Intensives (Boise, Idaho):
For families traveling from out of town, I offer weekend intensive sessions designed to provide focused, high-impact support in a short period of time. These intensives are ideal for spellers who benefit from immersive work and consistency across multiple sessions. All sessions are hosted at my home in Boise, Idaho.
Sample Schedule (Friday–Sunday):
Friday evening: 1 session
Saturday: 2 sessions
Sunday: 1 session
Investment:
Weekend intensives are offered on a sliding scale, with a bundled rate for the full weekend.
Because these sessions take place over a full weekend and require dedicated scheduling, an additional intensive fee is included.

Final pricing will be discussed individually to ensure accessibility while honoring the time and energy this format requires.
